Kapha Say it: KAH-fuh

The dosha of earth and water: stability, strength and calm. How to keep Kapha light, motivated and balanced.

Kapha is made from earth (prithvi) and water (jala). It provides structure, lubrication and stability — muscles, bones, joints, immunity and emotional steadiness. Balanced Kapha brings strength and loyalty; excess Kapha brings heaviness and stagnation.

In balance

  • Calm, patient, loyal and compassionate

  • Steady memory
  • Lustrous hair and smooth skin

Out of balance

  • Lethargy, oversleeping, low motivation
  • Weight gain and water retention
  • Congestion, mucus, sluggish digestion
  • Attachment, resistance to change
  • Feeling heavy or dull in the morning

Diet

Favour

Light, warm, dry and spiced foods: leafy greens, broccoli, legumes, millet, barley, buckwheat, apples, pears, honey (raw, not heated), ginger, black pepper, turmeric. Tastes: pungent, bitter, astringent.

Reduce

Heavy, oily, cold and sweet foods: dairy, fried food, wheat in excess, sweets, cold drinks, large meals and late dinners. Tastes: sweet, sour, salty.

Daily habits

  • Wake early, before 6 am
  • Vigorous daily exercise
  • Dry brushing (garshana) before showering
  • Seek variety and new challenges
  • Avoid daytime naps and heavy evening meals

Yoga and breath

Energising, dynamic practice: sun salutations, standing poses, backbends and holding poses with effort. Breath: Kapalabhati (if appropriate) and Ujjayi.
