Agni (Digestive Fire)

Agni Say it: UG-nee

Agni is the fire of digestion and transformation. Learn the four states of agni and simple ways to keep it strong.

In Ayurveda, health depends on agni — the fire that digests food, experiences and emotions. When agni is strong, nourishment is absorbed and waste eliminated. When it is weak, undigested residue called ama is said to accumulate.

Types

  • Sama agni — balanced: regular appetite, comfortable digestion
  • Vishama agni — irregular (Vata): variable appetite, gas, bloating
  • Tikshna agni — sharp (Pitta): intense hunger, acidity, heat
  • Manda agni — slow (Kapha): heaviness, sluggish digestion

Signs of strong agni

Clear hunger at mealtimes, lightness after eating, regular elimination, steady energy and a clean tongue.

Signs of ama

A coated tongue, heaviness, dullness, poor appetite and bad breath are traditionally associated with ama.

Daily habits

  • Eat your main meal at midday, when agni is strongest
  • Sip warm water through the day
  • Avoid snacking between meals
  • Eat in a calm setting, without screens
  • Use digestive spices: ginger, cumin, fennel, coriander
  • Leave 3–4 hours between meals
