The starting point

Start with the approach you want to teach.

Yoga Nidra is taught through different schools and methods. Read how a provider describes its approach, where it comes from and what students learn to guide.

iRest is one named approach with its own training and certification process. Its requirements should not be applied to every Yoga Nidra course. Choose the method first, then examine its teaching route.

Know what the course expects.

Try the approach you are considering before choosing a course. Notice the language, pace and structure, and bring your questions to the training team.

Entry requirements vary. A course may expect yoga teaching, meditation practice or earlier study within its own method. Confirm what is required for admission and for teaching afterwards.

Inside the training

Give your guiding time to develop.

Look for practice, feedback and clear rules for using materials.

01

Learn the structure

Understand how the method organises a practice.

02

Practise your guiding

Work on instructions, timing and a clear ending.

03

Offer choices

Learn to support different ways of taking part.

04

Review your teaching

Use observed practice or recordings for feedback.

Read the Yoga Nidra course checklist

Look for time to guide others and listen back to your work. Useful feedback can address whether instructions are clear, whether pauses leave enough space and how a session comes to a close.

Ask how scripts are used. You need to know whether you can adapt, record or share course materials, and what permission is needed to use a named method.

A course should help you understand the structure it teaches, rather than simply memorise a script. Ask how you learn to prepare students, guide the practice and allow time to return to ordinary activity.

Check how participant choice is taught. People may prefer another position, open eyes or a pause. Find out how the teacher responds if a participant wants to stop or needs further support.

Look for discussion of consent, privacy and the limits of teaching. Avoid choosing a course because it promises that one practice will treat every difficulty. Teaching Yoga Nidra is not the same as training as a clinician.

Time, format and fees.

Check the timetable, full costs and help available from teachers.

Questions to ask a school ↓
How will your guiding be reviewed?

Find out whether trainers observe live sessions, review recordings or both. Ask how you receive feedback and whether you can revise an assignment.

For online learning, check the equipment needed to record clear speech. Confirm who can access your recordings and whether other people’s participation needs consent.

Look beyond the first training fee

A named certification route may include more than an initial course. Budget for any later training, supervision, assessments and ongoing fees that apply.

Read the provider’s current terms before making plans. A price for an introductory level should not be assumed to include full certification.

Keep listening to your teaching

Revisit recordings of your guiding with permission from anyone involved. Notice where an instruction is rushed or where a pause could be clearer.

Keep practising the method yourself and stay in touch with an experienced teacher. Use feedback to develop a steady voice rather than trying to sound like someone else.

Your training and certificate

Understand the steps to certification.

iRest distinguishes its Level 1 training from its full teacher certification. Its published certification requirements include further study, assignments and supervision. Check the current process directly with the institute.

For any provider, ask which title you may use after completion. Get a clear answer about what you can teach or record, and any conditions for using its materials or name.

Before you book

Questions to ask a school.

Use these questions when you speak to the course team.

  1. Which Yoga Nidra approach does the course teach?

  2. What previous practice or training is required?

  3. Will you observe my guiding or review a recording?

  4. How do you teach participant choice and responding to difficulty?

  5. May I adapt, record or share the scripts?

  6. What further work and fees apply to full certification?

Common questions

What else would you like to know?

Here are a few things to check before joining.

Is every Yoga Nidra course an iRest course?

No. iRest is a named approach with its own requirements. Other schools teach Yoga Nidra through different methods.

Does Level 1 mean full certification?

Check the provider. iRest separates Level 1 training from full teacher certification, which has additional requirements. Other schools may use different titles.

Can I record guided sessions after training?

Confirm the rights to scripts, materials and any method name first. If other people are recorded, discuss permission and privacy before recording.
